BUTCH CASSIDY & SUNDANCE KID IN PATAGONIA
This
page contains a QuickTime VR virtual visit of their Patagonian cabin, made
in February 2000
They
came around 1902 with Sundance's wife, Etta (Ethel) Place and settled for
four years,
building a cabin and getting along just
fine with their neighbors. The Pinketon agency
eventually found out about the US bandits'
new cattle ranching life, but Butch and Sundance
were warned about the impending arrival
of headhunters wanting to cash in the reward on
their heads.
They left their Patagonian hideout around 1905 for Chile and later Bolivia,
where one evening
in 1908, after
having robbed a mine payroll, surprised by soldiers in the town of San Vicente,
Butch killed his first man who entered their resting place trying to arrest
them. After a shootout
between them and the soldiers, three shouts of desperation and two shots were
heard from
inside the adobe hut. When the soldiers entered it the next morning, they
were found dead,
Sundance with a bullet in the forehead and Butch with one in his temple. Most
likely, they
committed suicide.
If
you are interested in their story, we highly recommend Anne Meadows' book
"Digging Up
Butch & Sundance" (Bison books) and the website
maintained by Anne Meadows and
Dan Buck, two historians who traced the South American trails of the famous
outlaws.

We
visited the house they built at their Patagonian hideout and where Butch,
Etta Place
and
Sundance lived for several years around
the beginning of the century.
You can download two identical versions
of a virtual visit (walkthrough) which
consists
of six exterior and three interior 360
degree panoramas.
You have to wait for the entire archive to download until you can view them.
